The weed was doing its job. I was relaxed… outwardly. Inside, I was a hot mess of anxiety.

July thirty-first. Less than a year away. All of this is going to come to a head in just over eight months. Am I going to be alive a year from now? Will I be alive on August first?

The fact that July thirty-first was also my birthday didn't help my nerves.

The thought of dying didn’t bother me as much as the thought that some of my friends, old and new, may not make it through the coming of the Sorceress. That thought filled me with so much dread, I couldn’t bear it. Better to die myself than live without these people in my life!

I looked over to my friends, who were all assembled on the back patio. My original friends… Raina and Jack… were sitting in cushy-looking porch chairs, smoking their own pipes and looking as relaxed as ever. Not far from them were my new friends: Vincent sprawled out on an outdoor sofa, and Angelique looking down at him amusingly.

“Damn!” Vincent exclaimed, taking another drag at his ‘joint’. “This shade is stupidly good!”

“I grew roma tomatoes this year.” Raina replied. “I was winterizing my garden beds and remembered that they were in the nightshade family, so I thought you might like what was left of the leaves and stems.”

“Well, these roma tomatoes are kicking my ass!” Vincent lazily swung his leg at the knee, the most movement he appeared to be capable of at the time.

“So…” Jack said, looking at Angelique and hitting his glass pipe, “are you less impressed? You’re still upright.”

“Vincent’s a quarter of my age.” Angelique took a deep drag off of her ‘roma-joint’ and held the hit in while continuing. “I’ve had more roma leaves than he’s had O-positive.”

Everyone laughed at her joke. I took another hit of my own pipe... I had stopped rolling joints because I tended to over smoke when partaking of them. A pipe, especially the tiny one I favored, helped me stop before getting stupid.

I eased into my chair, and allowed myself to fully enjoy this time together. It wasn't very often that we got to spend time together without some realm of study going on, and that made times like this even more precious.

I closed my eyes, exhaled a long thin stream of smoke, and smiled. Despite my initial anxiety, life was good.

The fact that I found myself the next minute falling through an infinite black void was enough to dispel the haze of weed-induced contentment. I wheeled my arms and legs wildly, hoping against hope that I really was falling and not dreaming lest I kick one of my more conscious friends. I landed with an astral thud, which is perceived rather than felt. I 'stood'... oriented myself, is more like it... once again on the limitless, dull, flat plain.

Suddenly, a familiar-looking woman appeared in front of me with a weak smile.

“Well if it isn't a higher power.” I said somewhat sarcastically.
